1. Lasers And Their Applications Before Prosthetic Arrangements

Laser technology is almost used in every branches of dentistry. With the developments in laser types, their application areas are increasing continiously. When the literatures are evaluated it’s encountered that there are many studies about prosthetic applications of lasers. The purpose of this review is to give general information about their use in dentistry and additionally to give information about the preprosthetic treatments that can be done with the laser techonology.

2. Attachment systems for implant supported complete dentures

Treatment of edentulousness with implant-supported complete dentures enhances stability and function, reduces pain and discomfort, and ensures patient satisfaction. Ball attachments, bars, magnets or telescopic systems are used in implant-supported complete dentures. In this review, indications- contraindications, advantages, disadvantages, clinical applications are described and compared. The dentist should decide for the type of the attachment for implant-supported complete dentures by considering the factors discussed and patient expectations.

3. Contemporary evidences of the relationship between periodontal disease and stroke

Stroke is the brain damage due to disturbance in the blood supply to the brain. It was known that inflammatory events play a role in the stroke pathophysiology. Local inflammation caused by periodontal diseases may results in endothelial dysfunction and atherosclerosis by increasing the level of systemic pro-inflammatory cytokines. There are some evidences that periodontal diseases may play a role in the development of stroke just like other acute inflammatory diseases. This review assessed recent evidences regarding the relationship between stroke and periodontal disease.

4. Evaluation of the tissue reaction of five different suture materials in rabbit palatal mucosa

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to evaluate local tissue reactions at silk, chromic gut, polypropylene, polyester, and polyglactin 910 suture materials for intraoral applications.
METHODS: One hundred eighteen sutures were placed into the palatal mucosa of 26 male New Zealand rabbits so that each animal included all five biomaterials. The animals were fed a soft diet and decapitated 2, 4, or 8 days after suture placement. Soft tissue specimens including suture materials were prepared for light microscopy to determine the inflammatory zones including eosinophil infiltration on the suture tract.
RESULTS: No significant differences were observed in the sutural zone diameter (Z1) between the suture materials at the 2nd day. At the 4th day, polypropylene and catgut had a lesser Z1 diameter compared to polyglactin 910. Dacron presented the widest mean Z1 diameter compared to polyglactin 910 (p<0.01), catgut (p<0.01), polypropylene (p<0.05) and silk (p<0.05) at the 8th day. On the day 8, the largest mean Z2 diameter was observed in dacron group compared to the mean Z2 values of catgut (p<0.05) and polyglactin 910 (p<0.01). Also the mean Z2 values of silk were significantly wider compared to polyglactin 910 (p<0.05). There was no difference between the eosinophil scores of the suture materials (p>0.05).
CONCLUSION: Within the limitations of the present study, it may be said that silk and dakron sutures apparently induced more severe inflammatory reactions. When selecting a suture material for intraoral use the surgeons should take into consideration the tissue reaction caused by materials.

5. Microleakage of Amalgam Restorations Bonded with Different Adhesive Systems

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to compare the microleakage of class-II amalgam restorations prepared with different adhesive systems.
METHODS: Standard class-II cavities were prepared on 28 caries-free premolar teeth and randomly divided into 4 working groups. Scotchbond Multi-Purpose (SMP), Scotchbond Multi-Purpose Plus (SMPP) ve Amalgambond-Plus (AP) were applied to the test groups, respectively. No adhesives were applied to the last group which was kept as the control (K) group. After the completion of amalgam restorations, teeth were thermocycled. Then they were immersed into indian-ink, sectioned and scored under light-microscope for both gingival and occlusal regions. Data were analized statistically.
RESULTS: There were statistically significant differences in both occlusal and gingival microleakage values of the groups (p<0.05). The specimens in the control group presented the highest scores in two regions (p<0.05). However, the differences between the test groups where 3 different adhesives had been used were not significant (p≥0.05) in occlusal region, but significant in gingival (p<0.05). The score “0” had been achieved for the specimens where AP was applied for both regions.
CONCLUSION: Adhesives that are manufactured specially for the amalgam restorations have been found to be more effective in decreasing the microleakage values of that restoration material.

6. Evaluating the Antimicrobial Efficacy of Root Canal Irrigants Against Candida Albicans And Enterococcus Faecalis: in vitro study

OBJECTIVE: To assess the antimicrobial efficacy of super oxidized water (SOW), NaOCl, chlorhexidine, and EDTA against Enterococcus faecalis and Candida albicans using disc diffusion (DDT) and direct contact (DCT) tests.
METHODS: In DDT, 20 µl of each solution was impregnated to paper discs and the discs were placed on agar plates containing either microorganism. The inhibition zones were measured after 24 h. In DCT, each solution was placed on the surface of agar plates that had been inoculated with each microorganism. After predetermined periods, transfers were made from the contact area between the test specimen and the cultured agar and from the area that had not been in contact with the test specimens. The results were read as presence/absence of microbial growth and statistical analysis was performed using Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney U-test test.
RESULTS: In the DDT, all solutions exhibited inhibition zones in varying degrees. CHX and EDTA showed significant antimicrobial properties against E. faecalis and C. albicans (p<0.05). In the DCT, all irrigants eliminated both microorganisms in all time intervals (p>0.05). Albeit, EDTA’s antimicrobial activity increased with the prolonged contact time.
CONCLUSION: NaOCl, CHX, and EDTA were effective against both microorganisms. However, the antimicrobial efficiency of SOW differed between tests.

7. Maintenance of soft tıssue closure by labıal pedıcle ısland flap: 3 case reports

Various procedures for obtaining soft tissue coverage of augmented areas for late or immediate implant placement have been used. The purpose of this case report is to present 3 cases treated by labial pedicle island falp for soft tissue closure after bone augmentation followed by late or immediate implant placement and to evaluate the healing of this soft tissue closure technique. After augmentation late implant placement was applied to 2 of the patients while immediate implant placement was used for the other patient. The primer soft tissue coverage was obtained in all patients and the healing of the soft tissue was uneventful. The labial pedicle island flap was found successful in maintenance of soft tissue closure in these 3 cases.
